Who are the Members of GIS(NSW) Inc.The Society is made up of people interested in the issues of gambling and how it affects our society at large. They are a group of people, many of whom who have been directly affected by the impact of problem gambling either as a gambler themselves or as a family member of someone who has a problem with gambling. Other members join us as professionals working in the fields of problem gambling, community development and welfare services. The initial impetus for the Society commenced in 1998. Many of the founding members were actively involved on the Shoalhaven Gambling Services Working Party that lobbied to obtain funding to set up a gambling specific counselling service in the Shoalhaven region. The model developed by this group incorporated not just counselling but community development, harm minimisation strategies and inter-sectorial co-operation working together across all major stakeholders to address issues related to problem gambling in our community. To date this has seen a comprehensive needs assessment conducted in the area, the establishment of a program of education for welfare workers, the establishment of self-help groups, a community library and the dissemination of a broad range of information and education to the locality including the general public, the local gambling industry and community service providers. We have found working collectively on this issue has achieved significant benefits for those affected by problem gambling, increased public awareness of the issues and supported service providers and the gambling industry alike. The society looks forward to sharing ideas on a State basis and encourages your input.
