Problem Gambling

Ask yourself these questions:

Is gambling affecting your life?

Do you gamble to escape worries or other uncomfortable feelings?

Are you increasing your bets or finding yourself gambling more often?

Are you concerned about a partner/friend or relatives gambling behaviour?

Are gambling related financial worries getting you down?

Is gambling affecting you relationships with family/friends/employers?

Have you lost time from work because of gambling?

Do you find yourself covering up or making excuses for your gambling behaviour?

Problem gambling is an issue of our times. As we see an increasing number of gaming opportunities presented in our communities, we are seeing an increasing number of people experiencing difficulties with gambling behaviour. In 1999 the Federal Government’s Productivity Inquiry into Australia’s Gambling Industries found that over 300,000 people nationally have moderate to severe difficulties with gambling. We suspect that this is just the “tip of the iceberg” as many people are reluctant to disclose their problem.

New South Wales has over 10% of the world’s gaming machines readily accessible in the majority of both rural and metropolitan communities. Access has been directly linked to gambling problems and up until recently there has been minimal community information available to assist people to help people understand the complexities of issues around problem gambling or how to identify the problem within the community.

GIS (NSW) is committed to informing the community about this psychological disorder and by increasing knowledge, we hope to make it easier for people to come forward for assistance. Like any other health problem, difficulties with gambling behaviour can be treated and with good information, understanding and treatment, many people have turned this problem around.

Through this website we will bring you up to date relevant information for self-help and of general community interest
