Understanding Problem Gambling: A Dilemma For Us AllWe hope in this website to share thoughts and experiences of problem gambling, as we grapple with understanding this phenomenon. We would like to hear from all sectors of the community about their experiences with this, but are also keen to provide up to date information and education to our readers. Whilst some may like to attribute causal factors to “people with problems’” the Productivity Commission’s (Federal) Inquiry 1999, clearly came out in regarding some gambling activities as precursors to problem gambling (poker machines in particular). The report provides a helpful model for over viewing some of these primary causal relationships, this is illustrated here in the hope of informing and prompting discussion on these causal effects. (see figure). Whilst a bit heavy going, the inquiry report is an excellent exploration into gambling issues in Australia and well worth a read.
