The Gambling Impact Society has joined the "Stop the Loss" coalition of community organisations to maintain the pressure on the government and all our political representatives to develop real and meaningful reforms to poker machines and reduce problem gambling in Australia. Our recent disappointment with the political process will only serve to strengthen the resolve of this campaign to ensure a greater voice for those who have suffered the negative consequences and the major damage of a poker machine addiction.

Here at the GIS we support ongoing community education, support services for individuals and families and the development of prevention and early intervention programs. But most importantly in relation to poker machine gambling we believe this is a product safety issue. Consumers need tools and bet limits to enable them to maintain safe play with what we know after 11 years of evidence based research and two Productivity Commission enquiries (1999 & 2010) is a product of "dangerous consumption".

The Stop the Loss Campaign will be working to increase understanding by the community as to why meaningful reform is necessary and create a balance to the misinformation promulgated by the gambling industry to undermine such change. This is your time to get involved . So visit the website, read the material that will be sent to over 1 million Australian households and get a balanced view. This is your Country, your community, your families and your consumer right to a safe product.

We Love Pokies Reform

Please find attached details of a consumer campaign to support the proposed gambling reforms. As members of our concerned community you can choose to support this campaign by asking for a Valentine Card to be delivered to parliament on 14th February - A Pink One to represent every person you know who has had a gambling problem or has been negatively affected by the gambling of another. In addition you can pick a white one to ask for your Federal MP to support these reforms and red ones are for anyone who has directly had a gambling problem.

Please provide information about this campaign to your friends and family so they may also have an opportunity to take part . The attached poster can be downloaded as a flyer to hand out or forward by email to those you think may be interested. Please forward it to you broader community networks for their consideration as well.

This is an important time for community action on problem gambling - we hope we can rely on your support.

Gambling Reform Advocates

Malcolm Turnbull, Liberal Member for Wentworth and Shadow Minister for Communications and Broadband is conducting a survey on poker machine reform as part of the Coalition's consultation on gambling reform.

Rev Tim Costello, Chair of the Australian Churches Gambling Taskforce welcomes the survey. This video is also available on Malcolm Turnbull's site.
http://www.malcolmturnbull.com.au/media/tim-costello-welcomes-problem-gambling-survey/

The survey contains useful links to research and data and will take about 15 minutes to complete.

If you decide to complete the survey, it might be worth noting that the Australian Churches Gambling Taskforce supports:
· Mandatory pre commitment measures on high intensity machines
· $1 maximum bets
· Removal of ATMs from gambling venues
· Additional resources for counselling
· Addressing live betting during sporting matches

The Taskforce does not support
· Voluntary pre commitment measures

The survey is available here: http://www.malcolmturnbull.com.au/uncategorized/survey-on-problem-gambling/

Kate Roberts asks -Do Clubs Really Understand Problem Gambling?

"The issue of problem gambling should not be the club's issue. We have members who provide support for the club through the use of facilities and the licenced and gaming services of the club. There is little evidence of problem gamblers using clubs yet it seems clubs are required to meet the substantial costs of compliance to meet the so called problem gambling problem". Pre-Commitment Consultation Paper, 15 Sept, 2010, P.2)
