NAGS Conference 2006Once again the National Association of Gambling Studies held an interesting and diverse conference on gambling at Star City Function Centre, Sydney. GIS (NSW) was represented by Kate Roberts (chairperson) and Dorothy Webb (Secretary). As the only national conference on gambling studies it is a unique to opportunity to bring all stakeholders together to consider latest developments in research, community initiatives and industry developments. It proved another valuable opportunity for debate, discussion and consideration. This year Kate was involved in presenting on as part of the Health Promotion Forum on Youth and Gambling. She also held her regular lunchtime Responsible Gambling Awareness Week meeting on the Friday, where representatives form all State and Territories could reflect upon their activities this past year and plans for next. The momentum for a National Week is gaining ground and it was encouraging to hear a full presentation within the conference program designated to Victoria's “Stay in Control” campaign during their wee in 2006. Plans are to build RGAW “round up review” into the program for all future NAGS conferences so that we further planning for the week and review our activities across the Nation. Unfortunately there were very few presentations on public health approaches to gambling. There were some good presentations from Victoria and SA on peer support programs and consumer participation in treatment programs and public awareness raising but few opportunities to discuss a coordinated Health Promotion approach to gambling, something the GIS is keen to see come to fruition.
