Supreme Court Decision On Romsay Pokies ImminentVictorian Media Release 19/3/08: VLGA CEO Ms Rae Perry today said that the ‘David and Goliath battle over pokies in Romsey’ has taken a welcome turn this afternoon with a Supreme Court decision ruling that the local community’s strong opposition was relevant and should be considered by VCAT. “ The Macedon Ranges Shire was taking a big gamble in taking this matter to the highest court in Victoria, but their leadership has been vindicated with this decision.” “ This now means that the State Government’s own regulator – the Victorian Commission for Gaming Regulation and the highest court in Victoria both agree that local community views must be considered by VCAT as legitimate inputs into this application for pokies.” “ Local communities and councils deserve the right to determine how their communities should grow and what they should look like. This includes using sound policies to say when locations for pokies are appropriate and when they are not.” “ We hope that once councils adopt new local policies to provide guidance about the appropriateness of locations for new pokies, this situation where the Government regulator and VCAT can have different views does not occur again,” Ms Perry concluded.
