US Federal Legislation To Address Growing ProblemINFO FROM ARNIE WEXLER (Posted on GamblingIssuesInternational@yahoogroups.com ) Significant new Federal legislation has been proposed to address the growing population of problem gamblers in our nation. HR 6009, the Comprehensive Awareness of Problem Gambling Act of 2006, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 28th by Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA). The highlights of this bill include: * Financial support for a National Problem Gambling awareness campaign. * $4 million a yr for 4 yrs (2007-2011) for research. * $10 million a yr for 4 yrs (2007-2011) for prevention & treatment. The National Council for Problem Gambling (NCPG) played a major role in the drafting of this legislation & plans on actively lobbying for its passage. This campaign will be conducted at both the national & state levels. Rep. Meehan & his staff deserve our sincere appreciation for the introduction of this bill. The NCPG is also very deserving of our respect now that their long &d hard work to raise public awareness of problem gambling in our country is beginning to bear fruit. HR 6009 represents the first time in the history of the United States that a bill to specifically provide federal funding for problem gambling treatment has been introduced. Comment from the GIS Chairperson: “Wouldn’t it be great if our Federal Government got behind such an initiative in Australia” Kate Roberts Please let us know whether the information on this page was useful.
