2004 Report

Plans continue to evolve for the Responsible Gambling Awareness Week in NSW and across the Nation with services developing plans for a variety of activities during the week.

This year the Gambling Impact Society (NSW) has offered to coordinate activities at a State-wide level with the support of the NSW Council on Problem Gambling. What this means in practice is that the GIS(NSW) is hoping to provide additional resources to all CCBF funded gambling services to encourage them to develop their own activities during the week and in this we hope to include our gambling awareness video which is currently under development, information about the society and posters. We anticipate that the CCBF G-line resources shortly to be distributed will also support activities during this week and of course any resources available at a local level to individual services.

At a State level, we are hoping to join in the plans for the gambling exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum with an opening of the week and a launch of the our gambling awareness video on May 10th as part of a preview the museum is planning for high school teachers and school counsellors.

In addition, we are planning a local launch of the video here in the Shoalhaven at Nowra on Thursday 13th May as part of an all day Responsible Gambling Awareness Seminar. The day will include a viewing of the video and community consultations around problem gambling issues. There will be a series of presentations and workshops on issues such as understanding the risks of gambling, identifying people affected by problem gambling in your service, impacts on families, options for change, and understanding the odds - gambling in Australia.

This free seminar will be targeted to community service providers and members of the general public who may have an interest in gambling. Information stalls on a variety of relevant literature & resources will be available with plenty of time for discussion and networking.

Also during the week there will be series of radio programs run by the Bay & Basin Community Resource Centre radio station. This will be youth focussed with young people having developed the programs for their own community. Topics will include, the impacts of having a family member with a gambling problem, identifying youth gambling problems, knowing the odds and where to get help. The programs will be recorded onto a CD Rom for distribution to gambling services, schools and youth groups as a discussion tool at a point later in the year.

So ... What can you do in your own locality. Well why not think about developing an article for your local press, how about an information stall in your local shopping mall with information about your local problem gambling services and other relevant support services. Why not use the opportunity to promote your service, G-line and the work of the Gambling Impact Society (NSW). Let people know about the latest harm minimisation strategies including self-exclusion, develop a local group discussion, contact your local radio station, hold an information day– whatever– get out there and let people know about it. Then let us know how you got on by e-mailing us. Remember this is the first of what we expect to be an annual event– your are the pioneers and from small acorns.... we can only grow. Keep up the good work & keep in touch!
