Practitioners Forum 2007

Call for presentations

The GIS would like to invite all gambling practitioners and other interested parties to join them on May 7th 2007 for the launch of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week at a Health Promotion & Gambling Forum at the Wesley Centre, Pitt St, Sydney. The GIS is aware that there are few programs aimed specifically at health promotion and gambling and unlike Victoria an some other Sate little dedicates funding or staff allocate to health promotion, early intervention or community educations. As these are a major part of the GIS’s commitment to gambling we would like to honour the work gambling practitioners have been doing in these fields know that often this is squeezed in around their existing counselling commitments and with little health promotion training..

We therefore invite you to join us for a day of education, exploration, information sharing and debate in the how of we can move this discussion further towards a comprehensive approach to gambling including health promotion, early intervention and harm minimisation as well as treatment for those affected. The GIS is concerned that currently only 7% of those affected by Problem gambling ere seek treatment, leaving 93% to struggle with limited support. Currently there is no government policy tin NSW on health promotion, early interventions or community education and as a result practitioners have few models to guide them.

We therefore invite practitioners to come together to share their ideas through short presentations on what they have done in their aims of community education, early intervention and health promotion. The day will also involve presentations from those in the health promotion field with a and a facilitated process to developing dome frameworks to assist us in developing dome models on this with a view to moving this debate forward and assist policy development eventually.

There will be a small cost to cover the day and the delicious lunch we are planning (approval. $40) so mark it in your diaries, think about your contribution and what you would like to get out of the day.

If you would like to share your ideas, present a 15 minute talk on your work or just want some more information about the day contact Kate Roberts: 02 44215 077
