Public Seminar 12 May 2008Responsible Gambling Working Upstream: Prevention, Protection, PromotionThe GIS will once again be launching Responsible Gambling Awareness Week with a Public Seminar at the Wesley Conference Centre, 220 Pitt St Sydney on Monday May 12th. Members of the public, community/ welfare agencies, counsellors, problem gambling counsellors, members of the gambling industry, government representatives are invited to attend. The seminar will focus on the concept of “working upstream”—as opposed to treating those already drowning. It is a public health analogy to encourage us as a community, gambling operators and those working in the field of problem gambling to consider not just the needs of those already affected by problem gambling but how we can better protect people from developing problems through prevention, early intervention and health promotion. The seminar will be opened by the Minister for gaming and racing—Graham West who will launch the week with an opening address. A range of guest speakers have been chosen for their interest and experience in populations/public health approaches to gambling and problem gambling and consumer protection as well as research. Guest speakers include Ross Billi—A presenter form Victorian Justice Department widely recognized for her experience and interest in a public health approach to gambling. Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council who have just conducted some major research into the needs of the NSW Aboriginal community and problem gambling. Consumer Voices—an overview of initiatives where consumers are included in service development and delivery. Responsible Gambling Fund Branch (OLGR) with an overview of their Youth Awareness Campaign. Richard Woolley—a University of Western Sydney researcher who recently published his “Risky Business A Few Provocations on the regulation of Gaming machines” paper. Read Richard’s paper as a pdf : www.gisnsw.org.au/rgaw/livingstone-woolley.pdf. Ross Ferrar - Chief Executive Officer for the Australian Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association A highlight of the day will be an open debate between Richard Woolley and Ross Ferrar with their thoughts on consumer protection and gaming machines. This will be chaired by Dr Clive Allcock a prominent consultant in the field of problem gambling.
