Responsible Gambling Awareness WeekFor the past 5 years the Gambling Impact Society (GIS) has hosted an awareness week in NSW and loosely coordinates this week with others nationally. The second week of May each year is set to encourage communities, gambling venues, welfare agencies, specialist problem gambling counselling services and the NSW government, to join together to promote information about the risks of gambling, along with information on how to maintain heath and safety when gambling and where to go if problems with gambling develop. In NSW this is considered Responsible Gambling. Gambling venues such as clubs, hotels and the Casinos have host responsibility to provide gambling within the current legislative environment. This includes providing player information to assist people to understand their chance of winning to enable them to make informed decisions but also to advise them where to get help if their gambling gets out of control. This includes promoting access to their self exclusion program which is available at all clubs, hotels, Tab venue, Telephone betting and the Casino. In the lead up to the week all venues in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven will receive an information pack whilst others can access material online at this website This year the NSW Government through Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR) is actively promoting information about youth and gambling issues and will be launching a major Youth and gambling awareness campaign at the beginning of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week. It will use new technologies such as SMS messages and online information to reach younger people who may be getting into difficulties with gambling, along with promotion about gambling and problem gambling to reduce, raise and or prevent harm.
Community and Welfare services are encouraged to get involved in the awareness week. In preparation for the week the GIS is distributing information packs including a free copy of our DVD Less than Even : The Hidden Costs of Gambling. These are posted to GIS members, as well as major community services in the Shoalhaven and Illawarra, NSW State –wide TAFE libraries, Regional Centre Libraries and the approx. 60 specialist problem gambling counselling services across the State. We would like to reach further into the State but with minimal funding this is restricted. However this year we are making the most of the packs resources available online at this website so other agencies can download a Responsible Gambling Awareness Week Tool kit and use this to promote information in their services. The RGAW tool kit includes: GIS Media Release Pause Off The Pokies Poster Gambling Help Sheets G-line Counselling Service Information GIS Service Brochure Player Information Brochure (AGMMA) Public Seminar Information Flyer The Week will be launched at a public seminar in Sydney on May 12th (see inside for more details). In addition a number of local activities across the state will be hosted by the regional Specialist problem gambling services who will be promoting their services and information about how to reduce harm from gambling, how to identify a gambling problem and where to get help.
