Twelve Ways To Achieve A Successful RecoveryThanks to John Sabados for another helpful article. 1. Don't force a recovery. Let it happen naturally. If something is meant to be, it will come together if you start to enjoy it. Keep talking to someone about it. 2. When things aren't going so well, take a break from everything for a day or two - and don't think about anything. Everything will look different when you get back to it. Take time to just listen to someone. 3. Be sure to look at the whole life ahead of you, not just a tight fist holding on to rules of recovery, afraid to let go sometime in the future because there is a chance of relapse. Getting worried about little things that might happen only lead to frustration. 4. Perseverance pays off. Anything important in everyone's life went together bit by bit. Seldom does something happen overnight and recovery is not an exception - it takes time. 5. When you're working on a problem and something doesn't work, don't get upset over it and stop completely. Leave it for a while and move to another problem. In the meantime ask for solutions and advice so you can come back to the other problem again. 6. There are others that have walked through this path already and will know the landscape. There is no shame in asking for directions. It's better than getting lost in the wilderness, and besides you'll feel better knowing that you're not alone. 7. Having variety in your life will spice up your new habits. It's having different options to choose from when you get stuck that will make all the difference. Create variety so you can swap seats if someone blocks your view. 8. Working together with family and friends will make recovery so much more easier to handle. Create an army of allies to stand by you and make this a fun journey, not something that will create regrets of yesterdays past. 9. Establish your goals ahead, create a path that you can follow by knowing what you want and what you don't want. Having some boundaries will give you a sense of security and order. 10. Don't be afraid to try different ways. There is no law to say that there is only one way to achieve recovery, no matter what anyone tells you. If one doesn't suit, try another. Different courses for different horses. And there ARE different ways. Important things is to keep trying. 11. Take time to reward yourself at the end of each day, even if it's only an ice-cream. Tell someone about your success, because even one day is important. Affirm your day on a positive note - it will make tomorrow that much more important. 12. Keep telling yourself that anything worth doing takes time and effort. Good life can't be rushed - it needs to be enjoyed, not cried over. Create a picture that you want to look at it when the time comes - something you can proudly pass on.
