Sydney Problem Gambling CentreFairfield will be on the frontline of Australia’s battle against gambling addiction with the city tipped to house the country’s first problem gambling centre. Fairfield RSL Club and the Salvation Army unveiled plans to establish a Sydney Problem Gambling centre next year. While the centre’s site was not confirmed, Salvation Army spokesman Pat Daley said it would almost certainly be in Fairfield. The centre would be based on the highly successful Las Vegas model established by Professor Bo Bernhard in 2000. It would treat hundreds of problem gamblers every month with clinicians, a psychologist and counsellors working on site. Instigated by Fairfield RSL Club, the centre’s development has been driven by the club in partnership with the Salvation Army for several months. Club general manager Anthony Sobb said the club was likely to have an ongoing involvement with the facility, in addition to it’s financial backing. “From out point of view, we’d like to have the centre in the local area......we are the gaming belt in Sydney, so it makes sense to have it here,” Mr. Sobb said.
