Sydney Women’s Counselling CentreWhile more gender specific research is needed around all aspects of the issue of women and gambling, it is generally acknowledged that women gamble for different reasons from men. It seems that women who gamble on poker machines especially, use this as a strategy to seek respite from their personal problems. Unfortunately as poker machine gambling is highly addictive, women can find themselves adding the problems associated with this addiction, to the problems they were originally seeking respite from. The Sydney Women’s Counselling Centre is a service for women that provides counselling, information and group support. Situated in Campsie, Sydney, the Centre has been running for over 15 years assisting women on a broad range of issues that affect their well-being. We recognize that gambling can impact women both directly through their own gambling issues as well as indirectly, through the problem gambling issues of someone close to them. It is for this reason that we offer support to all women who may be struggling as a result of gambling regardless of who the ‘problem gambler’ is. Our counselling services are free of charge and are available to women throughout Sydney. As a centre we take a holistic & systemic view of client’s issues ensuring that we are working with a range of issues the client may be facing by recognising the social, environmental, economic, physical and cultural factors that affect women’s health. Please don’t hesitate to contact myself or the centre if you should have any questions or if you wish to book an intake session.
